Costumes in 'Midnight in Paris'

Now i know i am writing about yet another Woody Allen film, but i couldn't help it. Midnight in Paris is quite possibly his most beautiful film to date and i really wanted to share it with you. This nostalgic portrayal of Allen's love affair with Paris is definitely his most stylish film yet.

There is so much about this film that made me fall in love with it. Firstly, the cast is incredible. Owen Wilson has been perfectly cast in the lead and it is so refreshing to see the usually wholesome Rachel McAdams playing a dispassionate, bland bitch. Marion Cotillard firmly became one of my favourite actresses after her performance in La Vie En Rose and once again she plays her character, this time an artists' muse, Adriana perfectly. I also feel i should give Alison Pill a special mention for her portrayal of Zelda Fitzgerald. Pill is relatively unknown to me but her, energy, passion and hearty performance have established her as an actress i will thereafter look out for. Although she had a relatively minor role, hers was definitely my favourite performance of the film. I guess though that Zelda Fitzgerald would be a dream character for any actress to get their teeth into.

Secondly, i love this film as i can really empathise with the characters of Gil and Adriana. I am definitely a person who wishes they had been born earlier; that i would have thrived during the 1920s or the 1960s for example. The film's message that every era is a golden era really struck a chord with me. We are living during a golden age now and we should make the most of it. Our descendants will look back and wish that they had lived during 2011 and dressed like us.

Thirdly, this film is so beautiful. Everything from the cinematography to the costumes, to the sets is spot on. The period costumes, designed by Sonia Grande, don't make the actors look awkward, they look comfortable and just as i imagine they would have. The 1920s costumes in particular are amazing. They are glamorously bohemian and incredibly stylish. This film would be my dream as a costume designer. You'd get to design a little bit of everything. Not only that, but the end product is bound to be incredibly stylish, as you are dressing incredibly stylish people. Characters include the Fitzgeralds, Hemmingway, Dali, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec and Adriana (a fictitious artists' muse). These people were all truly artistic icons of their time and are bound to be exciting and inspiring.

The only thing i wasn't quite sure about was some of the clothing choices that were made for McAdams' character Ines. In keeping with her character it appears that she is entirely clad in designer wear; Chanel, Dior, Hermes etc. I can see why this was done but i fear that here the large production budget may have stilted Grande's incredible flair and creativity.

Also, kudos to whoever designed the poster. It is a perfect reflection and accompaniment to the film.

Here are some photos to help show the beauty of this film. Please do try and watch it for yourselves though. You won't be disappointed.

Page Blanche

Now considering that my roots are as a Theatre Designer, i haven't really posted much about it. Recently, i don't think i have been watching anywhere near as much Theatre as i should. However, on Sunday i luckily stumbled on a performance happening outside the National Theatre as part of the Thames Festival. I am so glad i did as it ended up being one of the best pieces of performance art i have ever had the joy to watch. The play was called 'Page Blanche' and was by a Belgian company called Compagnie Luc Amoros. It was incredible.

It is extremely difficult to describe this peformance, but thankfully i took some photos to show you. Basically it is a live art show featuring nine canvases stretched out to form a giant blank page. 6 actors use these 'canvas's' and 300 kilos of paint to create political messages and extraordinary works of art.

I am having real difficulty describing why this was so amazing. All i know is that i enjoyed it so much. You really have to see it live to understand, but i hope these photos can begin to demonstrate how engaging this performance actually was.

Heaven, I'm in heaven...

I recently went to the National Theatre's Costume and Props Hire and OMG it is absolute heaven there. The lovely staff managed to fit me in a last minute appointment to hire some costumes for The Polka Dots video. I managed to get everything i needed within my budget which was incredible given the amount of extras i had to dress!

I shall definitely be going back there the next time i need some specialist clothing. Every costume that has been used in a National Theatre's play ends up there, so as you can imagine there is a LOT! I went there in particular as i needed some 1940s American GI uniforms. They of course had some knocking about from an earlier production of South Pacific.
.
Here are some photos to show you just how much of a cave of wonders it is there. Hidden away in the back streets of Oval, this is truly a gem of the costuming world!

Back to the 1940s with 'The Polka Dots'

Sorry i haven't posted for a while. I've been so crazy working, moving house, designing and organising things i haven't had the time. So busy! I promised myself that tonight i would make the effort to blog something... so here it goes!

I thought i would show a litte bit of what i have been up to. I have just finished designing the costumes for a music promo. It's directed by Adam Coop for Angelic Films and acts as a showcase for a band called 'The Polka Dots'. 'The Polka Dots' bring you a modern twist on the legendary Andrews Sisters 1940s American close harmony trio.

This was such an amazing project for me. As you well know i have been dying to work on something period for a while. Buying more and more jeans can get really dull, so this was an absolute breath of fresh air!

The lovely ladies at the National Theatre's Costume Hire luckily managed to squeeze me in for a last minute appointment. I spent the whole day picking out LOADS of 1940s clothing. They have so much there at reasonable prices. It was absolute heaven!

Here are a selection of the stills taken by photographer Alex Ruocco. I think they all look fantastic!-
