Vicky Christina Barcelona is the story of two girls are on holiday in Barcelona; Vicky (Rebecca Hall), is sensible and engaged to a sensible, 'boring' man, and the other, Christina (Scarlett Johansson) is a bohemian free spirit trying to find herself. They both get propositioned by a sexy, mysterious Spaniard, whose violent ex-wife (Penelope Cruz) erupts into the story as an wild and sexy complication.
This may seem like an unusual choice for my blog, but i thought the whole film was utterly stunning. I am a massive Woody Allen fan and this didn't disappoint. I love the story, the cinematography is beautiful, and Penelope Cruz gives an incredible performance as the energetic and feisty Maria Elena. The backdrop of Barcelona is one of the most beautiful locations i have ever seen on film. It's definitely secured where my next holiday location will be!
Sonia Grande's costume design is relaxed, bohemian, simple, and perfectly pitched. Every single frame of this film is filled with tremendous warmth of colour and is so enjoyable to watch. I feel like i know every character personally.
I find it very difficult to put into words what i feel when watching this film (and just how amazing and passionate Cruz's performance actually is!); i can only urge you to go and watch it for yourselves.
Here are some photos. I hope they help to convey what i am trying to say-
